Happy Birthday Lucas & Landon!
Another year for Lucas and Landon. This year they, wanted a Minecraft cake and they, by they I meant Lucas, wanted me to make different "biomes". Yeah... it's a fancy word for "realm" or "world". So here I was thinking of the different biomes available and found out that apparently in different biomes, Steve, the main character in Minecraft, look different too. *scratch scratch my head
But hey, I do like challenges... so why not.
Here is the plan, Minecraft....has to be square...ish....each side of the cake represents different biomes, namely Plains, Tundra, Desert, Nether and ... get ready for this.... THE END. As for the characters, I decided to use mini Minecraft toys, which is part of the presents for the boys....smart eh!! Apparently there are many series of Minecraft toys and I bought them online from Amazon.com the characters for each of the different worlds.
Typically I like to make more of a 3D cake, but for this cake, I decided to test my paiting skills. Hey, if I can mold and make little figurines using fondant, painting...piece a cake (which I found out later on is ... not such a piece of cake).
So here's the Tundra, the snowy world. the base is white fondant and I painted it with food coloring. The frozen lake didn't turned out to be how I pictured in my head, but it kind a worked. As for the toys, we picked pumpkin snowman and snow wolf. To make it look more 3D-ish, I pushed in about half of the toys into the cake.

Next was the Desert biome. I wanted a very clear distinction beween the sky and the sand. And for the sky, I wanted it to be a real clear blue sky with no clouds. So I used two colors fondant, light blue and beige. To give texture, I used food coloring of light brown and using a brush, randomly dabbed to make it look more sandy. And yes, I painted the cacti as well. Impressed yet?

The third biome was the Nether. I used combination of black and yellow fondant. And it was not easy to make it precisely square (as you can see in at the bottom of the lava fall). Similar to the desert sand, I dabbed red food coloring over the yellow background to make lava look. And I believe the character is a witch.

The fourth world is THE END. Apparently this biome is just dark and sad. So I decided to combine black fondant and light off green color. I used combination of brown and dark green food coloring to make the ground looks even darker. And the creature is called... of course Enderman.

Finally the Plains. I picked this biome to be the top of the cake because it's the cheeriest of them all. I wanted to keep it simple green feel but also show that it's the Plains with grass and plants. So I used backdrop of Plains biome while keep the top flat green fondant with some grass using green cake frosting leaving enough room for the cute Minecradt characters.
And so .... ta da.... the Minecraft Multiple Biomes cake is DONE! Happy Birthday Lucas and Landon! Pheeeewwwww!
